Art's Barbeque

The History of Art's Barbeque

Art has been grilling and smoking for about 30 years. Since he retired, he has worked on the science of smoking and has gradually improved to where he is now. He has competed in several tournaments and has won awards for his meat and his sauces.

Several years ago, a good friend of Art's got him interested in judging at BBQ competitions. After becoming a Certified Judge for the Memphis in May competitions, Art realized that he was producing as good a product as the competitors. He has been a judge at the D.C. Barbeque Battle since 1999 and will judge again in 2007.

Art became interested in the Farmer's Market in Berryville, VA because of his wife. Art is retired... his wife is not. Art says, "She indicated that it might be wise for me to find another way to spend my Saturdays besides under her feet." That led Art to a "fun" way to spend a Saturday - being at the Market.

What started as a part-time affair has blossomed beyond Art's wildest dreams. He says he remembers years ago when a friend asked him to cook some ribs for a party of about 20 people. Today Art says, "I could not imagine while struggling to get those ribs done for 20 people that, in a few years, I would be capable of taking care of 500 people!"
